I was walking barefoot

ice cream dripping down my hand

chocolate, my favorite

summer wind blew the hair in my face

seven and carefree

I go to the beach just to

curl my toes in the sand

I don’t walk barefoot,

my toes sheathed with socks and shoes

burdened with exhaustion

the future seems bleak

my hair hangs limp

my hands, dry

17 and tired

I go to the beach

to escape my life

to drown my sorrow.
