5 Things I Wish I Could Tell my High-School Self

5 Things I Wish I Could Tell My High School Self

If I had the choice to travel back in time to my first day of high school, to do everything differently, there’s no way I would do it. High school played its part in shaping me into the woman I am today. If I had a choice to send a letter to my 14-year-old self, however, I would give that girl supporting words and advice on how to carry herself. Words that I think every high-schooler should live by.

    Be okay with being alone.

You’ll run into days when it feels like nobody is on the same wavelength as you like everyone else lives in a different dimension. Don’t strain yourself to fit in with the “cool” group. Don’t try to find a boyfriend because it’s what everyone else is doing. You’re always going to be your own best friend, so the sooner you accept yourself for everything you are and everything you’ll become, the sweeter life will be.

    Get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

This is going to play a big part in preparing you for life outside of high school. Ask yourself, what’s the worst thing that could happen? Take risks. When you challenge yourself and push your own boundaries, you open the door for beautiful, unexpected things to happen.

Don’t worry what others think of you.

Tell yourself this every morning when you wake up. And again in the middle of the day. And again. And again. Everyone is so concerned with what they’re doing and how they’re portrayed during high school, not what others are doing. Focusing on your own happiness and success will lead to the best memories.

    Stop worrying about the future.

I was notorious for this in high school, and consequently, it tainted my final two years. Trust me, you’ll do well on that test. You’ll be accepted into a good college. You’ll find a career doing something you love. There come a time and place to focus on those thoughts, but don’t stress out about it too much right now.

Realize that high school doesn’t last forever.

You might not believe it right this moment, but you’re going to miss the hallways you stroll down each day. You’re going to miss those homework assignments because trust me, they get a lot harder. You’re going to miss seeing those familiar faces every day. While there may be some excruciatingly painful parts of high school, you never realize what you’re going to miss. Don’t take a minute of it for granted. Don’t be in such a hurry to grow up; be present in each moment.

Just take the moment to soak it all in, because when you look back you’ll think that is so high school. Think about that and other advice in the article “It Will All Be Over Soon.”

The Final Pages of your High School Chapter

The Final Pages of your High School Chapter

High school seems like it lasts a lifetime. And then, in the blink of an eye, it’s over.

Before you realize it, you’ll be cheering on your team at the last home football game, hardly registering the fleeting experience due to the overpowering noise from the bleachers and marching band.

Soon after, you’ll be adding the finishing touches to your makeup, preparing to slip into your last prom dress.

Although it may seem like a relief, in a few short months, you’ll be walking into harshly lit hallways and classrooms for the final time. You never realize how much you’ll miss the rooms that had the supernatural ability to make five minutes seem like a full hour.

Speaking from personal experience, it’s easy to wish away the final days of high school. It’s easy to see everything from a negative perspective– too much homework, too many responsibilities, too little sleep.

Don’t fall victim to that mindset like I did.

Enjoy the time you have left with your friends; although you may spend eight or more hours with them now, soon, you will all be dispersed throughout the country, living different lives.

If you’re involved in sports, give your full effort without taking the game too seriously. Some of my favorite memories began with goofing around with my best friends at track practice. This will also be the last time someone forces you to exercise… take advantage of that.

Go all-out during spirit weeks and pep rallies. You’re not going to remember how silly you looked, you’re going to remember how much fun you had doing it. Don’t dull your high school experience by worrying about what others think.

High school is a whirlwind of stress and emotions, but somewhere in between all of that mess, lifelong memories were made. Don’t take the time you have left for granted– live in the moment. Spend that extra hour with your childhood friends.  Dominate the dance floor at prom. Attend every sporting event that you possibly can, and don’t be afraid to cheer at the top of your lungs.

These are the final pages of this chapter of your life. Make the most of them.

Check out this letter from a college student to a high school senior. And remember you’re only in high school once!

Even though you may be starting your senior year, that doesn’t mean you don’t have a chance to grow and change. Here’s some advice on how to your own person in high school

    Packing Hacks

    packing hacks

Do you find yourself, moments before you have to leave for the airport, cramming things into your suitcase, jumping and sitting on it, just praying that it’ll zip up?

Well, I do. In fact, more often than I’d like to admit. I travel pretty frequently and almost every time I find myself in this situation. Not only do I tend to overpack but I also tend to put the chore off as late as possible. The outcome of my packing procrastination is almost never good with forgotten necessities, wrinkled clothes, and popped zippers.

Soon I’ll be leaving for a three-week-long trip. For this trip, I have decided to push myself to break these packing habits. In order to do so, I am planning out my packing with lists of everything I need to bring, giving myself plenty of time, and testing and utilizing several packing life hacks I found online.

    Packing Checklist

The Hack:  Create your own checklist or Google a checklist online.

My Opinion: This was super easy. All I did was Google a packing list. Being able to visualize everything that I pack is super helpful. I got to feel satisfied as I completed the checklist and make sure that I packed everything that I needed. (Here’s a really great one!)

    Packing Cubes

The Hack: Essentially, these are containers that help organize your suitcase by compartmentalizing all of your belongings.

My Opinion: I really enjoy these because they allow me to stay super organized while traveling. The cubes make locating everything in my suitcase super fast and simple. Also, unpacking the cubes is super convenient. Additionally, the cubes help to use up every bit of space in my suitcase, so I can maximize the amount of stuff I pack. In short, I will use these for my trip.

Here is a tutorial on how to use them:

    Rolling Your Clothes

The Hack: Roll your clothes like burritos instead of folding them.

My Opinion: I quite like this hack because it seems to save a bit of space as well as prevent wrinkles that folding can cause. I plan to use this hack in combination with the packing cubes.

     Plastic Wrap On Toiletry Bottles

The Hack: Place plastic wrap over the opening of your bottles/containers then recap the bottle.

My Opinion: I have been using this hack for a while now and it definitely is effective in preventing the contents of the bottles from leaking out everywhere. Although, I would prefer a hack that is more environmentally friendly and can be reused.
If you like this idea, here are some other ways you can use plastic wrap while traveling.

    Travel Size Toiletry Bottles

The Hack: Reusable bottles that can hold your toiletries.

My Opinion: I like these a lot because they are reusable and come in a size that is TSA-approved. Transferring more viscous substances, such as lotion or moisturizer, into these bottles is tricky but possible. I recommend the bottles without sharp corners because the product tends to get trapped in those corners. Also, I recommend labeling the bottles.

    Dryer Sheets

The Hack: Place dryer sheets in your luggage to prevent odors.

My Opinion: I found that the dryer sheets helped to keep my clothes smelling nice and fresh. Also, by placing a couple of sheets with my shoes, any odors from my shoes were kept in check and not transferred to my other belongings.

    Final Thoughts

In conclusion, packing under a reasonable time frame and with optimal organization makes the whole experience way more enjoyable. Traveling is definitely a stressful experience, but the stress can be reduced with proper time management and preparedness.

Why is a Positive Attitude so Important?

    positive attitude

I’m not going to lie; there have been moments in my life where I’ve been a negative person. From being convinced that I could never get my driver’s license because of my terrible parking ability to complaining about my confusing math proof assignments, I have had my fair share of frustrating experiences that I’ve let myself get far too carried away with.

Through all these experiences, however, I have learned that negativity has never led to positive outcomes.

Having a negative attitude has prevented me from being able to face my challenges head-on. It’s also caused others around me, like my parents, to not be as supportive because they do not appreciate the way I am choosing to handle my problems. Positivity is key to accomplishing anything good in life. Therefore, it is very important to always try to stay positive- even in times when things aren’t looking so great. Here are eight reasons why a positive attitude is so important:

    1. Energetic, Active Mind: It is a fact that people who maintain a positive attitude are more curious and aware of the world around them. These individuals can see past themselves and gain a better understanding of the way life around them operates. Therefore, they are able to be better thinkers and are more creative.
    2. Ability to Develop Meaningful Relationships: People like being around positive people. Individuals who radiate positivity are able to make themselves and others feel good about them. I always love when my friends are positive about both themselves and about others. It lets me know that they are confident and proud of who they are, and are able to appreciate others. It is a good balance, and I think this type of outlook is important for any good relationship.
    3. Better Mood: When an individual has positive thoughts, Cortisol levels decrease and the brain produces the neurotransmitter Serotonin. This helps boost mood by creating a feeling of well-being and safety. Having a good mood makes everything seems to go well. This motivates people to continue to work toward doing positive things.
    4. Better Health: People who have a positive attitude tend to have lower stress levels and other issues in their lives. They stay healthier and maintain a better sense of well-being because they see taking care of themselves and seeking out a good life that they are satisfied with as important.
    5. Better at Overcoming Obstacles: People with positive attitudes are able to view obstacles as regular parts of life that everyone goes through. A positive attitude allows individuals to overcome these difficulties in life and increases people’s ability to persevere. As the saying goes “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” True to that, having a positive attitude can help an individual face anything that comes their way with good spirit.
    6. Increased Productivity: When individuals have a positive attitude, they are able to set goals for themselves and work towards achieving them. Staying positive allows an individual to believe in themselves and their abilities, and work towards overcoming obstacles as they come. This reduces procrastination and leads to more productivity.
    7. People See You As Valuable: In today’s hyper-competitive, stressful world, nearly everyone appreciates positivity. When someone shows that they are able to stay positive in tough times, they will be considered valuable by potential employers. An employee with a positive attitude is a great asset because they can get along with others and be productive.
    8. Greater Satisfaction With Life: With positivity, people are able to appreciate themselves and the things around them better. Individuals with positive attitudes are able to take a greater amount of self-control over their lives, and they are able to live their lives the way they want. This would allow them to follow their dreams and achieve their definition of success. What is life if it’s not worth living?

Sometimes, you need a little bit of a push to be more positive. That’s where “Perfect to Me” by Anne Marie comes in. Check out the song and instantly feel uplifted about yourself and the journey you’re going through.

    What is Money?

    girl counting money

Well, I don’t mean the definition, but more so, what is its purpose? Money is used for many things that vary based on age groups. For adults, the main money flow usually goes towards bills, necessities, or items for children. Children usually use their money for their wants, such as candy or games. Teenagers, specifically girls tend to buy for both of their wants and needs, such as necessities for their period as well as chocolate as an add on. The worth of a dollar has changed through the centuries, as it became more valuable to live on in the developed world, but the worth of a dollar also changes through the age cycle. I will explain how to use money as a teenager and how to use it, more wisely.

    Is money even necessary?

I would say money is not necessary, but, as a teen, I can say that changes as you get older. As a teen, you start to gather more money from different sources and of course, as an effect, spend more. The ways that you use money as a teen does affect your money habits as an adult, but as a child or even a teenager, I would say it is not as important to some as an adult.

    How can you earn money?

Some ways to earn money are through

    • Jobs
    • Parents
    • Chores
    • Passive Income

Some jobs that you can earn money from can be from neighbors, family, or friends, from things such as mowing lawns, helping with animals, babysitting, or even small things such as cooking and cleaning for others. You can earn money from chores or from your parents by doing tasks like cleaning, cooking, helping with pets, watching siblings, or getting an allowance.

The last way to earn money as a teen is from passive income. You could get passive income from

    • Stocks
    • Blogs
    • Youtube
    • Social Media
    • Small Business Online

Looking for other ways to earn money? Here are 49 ways to make money as a teen.

What should I do with my money?

One major thing that is helpful and that you have most likely heard more than once is to save your money! This can be annoying sometimes because you may never want to save your money but want to spend it responsibly, but saving is a major help for the long run. Saving your money can help by

    • Allowing you money for college
    • Helping your parents with money
    • Allow you to save for something big
    • Allow for better money habits
    • Good thing for emergencies

You can, of course, spend your money, wisely. A few tips to spend your money, which are short, but sweet:

    • buy what you absolutely need first, and what you want second.
    • When you shop, make sure you don’t already have that same item, even if it’s in a different color.
    • Be sure to buy based off of quality, not quantity. Four toothbrushes are good, but if you use them in one month, it would have been better to have gotten the one toothbrush that would have lasted for three months.
    • One other way is investing your money from banks or from stocks.

In conclusion, you should be sure to use your money wisely and efficiently. There are many more ways to make money and of course many things you can do with it, but as a teenager, the amount of notice you are taking in on your money should be a lot. One of the most important things that can alter your adult life is money, so as a teenager you should be very aware of what you are doing with yours.

    MakeUp Secrets, Tips, and Events

girlspring, makeup tips secrets and events

Do you want to know the secret to every beauty guru out there? They’re artists.

They practice almost daily to achieve the desired looks. Somehow, they know how to move a brush across their face and create something so pretty. The final results are so good that everyone is dying to get whatever product they use. However, it is important to not compare yourself, or your makeup to professional make up artists. It is similar to seeing a painting and wanting nothing more than to be able to paint like that.

Give yourself a break. This is the first step to achieving confidence with your looks.

Stop comparing yourself to others, and you might find that you enjoy the way you put your makeup on. I know that I struggled with this realization for a long time. I didn’t want to put in the effort to achieve some Youtuber’s “simple” makeup creation, only to be disappointed that I’m terrible at applying it myself.

Once you’ve accomplished facing reality, try looking at makeup differently. See it as a skill that you can either master or be decent enough to move on with your life. I know that I like learning new skills all the time, so why not add basic makeup application to the list.

There are classes you can take provided by certain beauty brands.

These may seem like a scam because you that you have to purchase so much makeup from them to participate. However, it ends up being a good deal. If you’re interested in honing your skills or crafting new ones, check out a local beauty store for upcoming events.

The brand Smashbox always does my favorite make-up events.

They seem to know what they’re doing, and you end up with high-quality products in the end. Plus, you get a cute little notebook and pen set to take notes.

A make-up event might involve arriving at the store an hour prior to opening times and attending a short class on basic application skills. At the end of the little class, you get a personal makeover and get the list of products you used. This is where spending the money on the brand comes in handy for you just as much as for the company. Go ahead and buy those products that looked so great on you.

Another beauty tip I want to share is that contouring does not have to be as crazy and hard as some people make it out to be.

A light and simple contour are achievable. Just take a darker than your skin-tone powder, a thin angled brush and begin at the height of your cheekbone (for reference follow the bone in your cheek to the tip of your ear). Then take a shade a little lighter than the dark shade and brush over it. And finally, finish with a shade that nearly matches your skin tone. If the lines are harsh, then take a blender brush and blend until you don’t feel like you have mud on your face.

If you are interested in the beauty tools that I use for my makeup or some preferred brands, then I will link them below.

I work as a nanny for a makeup representative, so I am all in the know for new products and techniques. I may not be talented with makeup myself, but I am at least confident in the simple ways that I can do it.
