Why You Should Learn to Drive

Saturday Well Spent by Victoria Bilsborough

There are many things we want to do when we are teenagers, and if there is one thing we all are absolutely desperate to do, it’s to learn to drive. Taking the driver’s seat allows you to gain a huge amount of independence and freedom that you wouldn’t have otherwise. It’s a big achievement to learn to drive nowadays, given the cost has risen over the years. However, it’s going to give you a massive responsibility to yourself and to those on the road. Girls, you may not yet know how much you want that independence and responsibility!

An important thing you could do before you learn to drive is to think about what kind of a car you would want. While we all daydream about the soft top, VW beetle, you may want to look at resources like Edmunds to decide whether or not this really is the best car for you. Speak to your parents, speak to your friends, but you ladies need to learn to drive. There is nothing worse than having to rely on everybody else to ferry you around from A to B. If public transportation is not going to work for you, then you need to take control.

Here are some of the reasons you should be gearing up to learn to drive.

  1. You will be relying on yourself. There’s a lot of things you want to rely on other people for in life, but driving shouldn’t be one of them. When you learn to drive, you don’t have to ask family and friends to drop you off at places; you don’t have to worry about a girlfriend or a boyfriend doing it for you, either. When you learn to drive you take a big risk on the road, but you get to boost your self-dependency and become more independent as a result.
  2. You will save time. When you need to get to school, to uni, or to work, it’s gonna be so much easier to jump in your own car, in your own time, and head off where you need to be. You don’t have to wait for a bus, you don’t have to wait for a taxi, you don’t even have to ask anybody for help, you’re doing it on your own, girl!
  3. It’s good for your pocket. Driving your own car can be money friendly; it’s an economical option for you to spend money on your own car instead of hiring a driver. When you are driving your own car for longer, you also have less money to pay in insurance – winner!
  4. Increasing your safety. When you’re in charge of your own car, you’re also responsible for your own safety. You don’t have to rely on anybody to get you from place to place, especially if you’re returning home from a night out. Your car can keep you safe, and you don’t have to queue in the dark for a bus after hours. It’s a good way to make sure you get home in one piece.
