Did you know that when girls hit their teenage years, their love for their passions and interests slowly dies off and becomes replaced by other activities? This is something that doesn’t happen so much with boys, but for girls, a wane in interest is a common thing.

Despite studies being done into this, there is no definitive answer as to why girls fall out of love with their hobbies and pursuits in their early teen years. Some think it is down to peer pressure; other theories suggest it is down to hormonal changes, but the reason is still elusive. But what was noted was that it is entirely normal to change what you enjoy as you change as a person, and there is nothing wrong with not linking at 13,14, or 15 what you did at 10 years old; it’s part of growing up.

But having hobbies isn’t something you should push aside simply because you’re starting to grow up a little bit more and your life isn’t the same as it once was when you were a child. Hobbies have many benefits for everyone, and getting excited and having fun about something can help you bring joy to your life, reduce stress, and give you an outlet for your creativity. You just need to find different ones you enjoy now.

But what hobbies should you do?

Dancing

If taking a dance class isn’t your kind of thing, then joining in with current social media dance trends is still classed as dancing and can still be a fun way to get moving to music and learn new skills. If you spend a lot of time on social media anyway, practicing recent dance trends is not only a fun way to keep fit but something you can do alone with friends. Even if you don’t post your efforts, you can practice until you get them right and even make up your own routines.

Make Music

Everyone listens to some form of music, be it pop, rock, classical, or even religious music. But have you tried your hand at making music? Composing songs, creating beats, writing lyrics? It’s not just about learning to play an instrument, although this is a good option too. You can look at other ways you can make music. Equipment such as Singular Sound’s MIDI Maestro can help you improve the music you make for a better sound experience, but creating music on your laptop to begin with can be a great way to get started.

Get Creative

Put pencil to paper and draw nature, create graphic novels, upcycle clothing or furniture, make something, break something to make it again, and take pictures. Creativity isn’t limited, and you get creative in many different ways. and the best part is, that art is subjective, so you can make it look and feel exactly how you want it to; just do what feels right for you.

Simply choose your medium, be it paint, pencil, crayons, clay, etc, and see what happens when you let your mind take over and go with what you are feeling. Even if you don’t think you’re good at it, the benefits from trying are not the finished results.

Reading and Writing

The beauty of reading is that it doesn’t have to be classic books that you think you’re supposed to read or that others tell you that you should be reading. Reading anything counts. Even the back of a cereal box. Find a genre you enjoy and read. Be it comic books, instruction manuals, autobiographies, or popular pop culture novels, it can be absolutely anything. The act of reading itself is more important than the words you consume, and it’s a great way to pass the time, relax, and escape real life, even for a short period of time.

Writing often goes hand in hand with reading, and avid readers tend to love writing, too. Take inspiration from your favorite books or movies, and then create your own story around those characters to get started. You don’t need to be an award-winning novelist from the very first word, but freeing your imagination to help you create an entirely new world can be cathartic and allow you a way to express yourself and get your thoughts and feelings out. It can even be semi-autobiographical if you like, and based on your own experiences, it’s completely up to you.

Sports

Sports are a great way to stay fit and healthy and spend your time doing something you love. You don’t even have to compete at a competitive level; you can simply do it for the enjoyment of it. Go for a run, play basketball or football, swim, cycle, skateboard, or do it all! The choice is yours, but playing some form of sport or doing physical activity can help you to improve your physical and mental health and give you a productive and fun way to spend some of the approximate 5 hours per day teenagers apparently have free, according to research.

Fitness

As mentioned above, fitness comes in many forms; swimming is an excellent way to stay fit, as are the rest of the sports. But if team games aren’t your cup of tea, but you want to keep active, then you have other options.

You can join a gym, find a fitness class in person or online to join, join a dance class, go hiking, take up yoga or pilates, or start strength training. There are many options for you to try. If being fit and healthy is your top priority or you want to feel good about yourself, finding fitness options that work for you can be highly beneficial.

There are countless hobbies for teenage girls you can do to help you spend your time. If you feel that something is missing from your life, or you are simply bored, then picking up a new hobby or returning to an existing one can provide you with the mental stimulation you need and keep you occupied. But remember, the main aim of a hobby is to keep it fun; it is supposed to be enjoyable and something you want to do all the time. Even if you don’t do it every day and pick it up occasionally, stick with it!

This is really helpful! I think one reason girls fall out of hobbies is academic and social pressure. I guess there isn’t much time to pursue hobbies if you’re studying or hanging out with your friends.
