How to Always Be Yourself
It’s easy for other people to tell you just to ‘be yourself’, but there are plenty of pressures that every teenage girl feels to fit in, or to be liked, and sometimes that can lead them to think that being themselves just isn’t enough.
The truth is, it is always enough. Being happy in life is one of the most important things you can do for yourself. Without happiness, you won’t ever feel truly fulfilled; no matter how successful you become or the adventures you have, if you’re not happy, none of it will mean anything.
Read on to find out how to really be yourself, no matter what anyone else says, so that you can be happy and do great things that you’ll always be proud of.
Don’t Try to Please Others
If you find you are always doing what someone else wants rather than what you want, you are living your life pleasing others and not yourself. Although it’s nice to make other people happy, there is definitely a line that you shouldn’t cross because when you do, not only will you lose everything about yourself that makes you unique (you’ll essentially become a clone of the person you’re trying to please), but you’ll also never be able to do whatever it is you want to do, whatever it is that you know will make you happy.
You must learn where your boundaries are so that you can help others when need be, but also know when to turn away and do your own thing if you want to. It’s a hard lesson to learn, perhaps the hardest on this list, but once you have mastered it, you will feel free and happy, and you will finally be yourself.
Following on from the above point, the better you know yourself, the more able you will be to say no when you have to because whatever you are being asked to do doesn’t line up with your true nature, and will only make you miserable.
Whatever it is you like, whether you enjoy doing a particular hobby that no one else seems to know about, or you enjoy a particular musician that others don’t think is ‘cool’, or you like to wear mens reading glasses frames because they suit you, even if others think it’s a strange idea, you need to do it.
Get to know yourself and what makes you happy, and then follow that path. If no one is on the path with you, that’s okay – they don’t have to be. If you’re happy because you’re heading in the right direction, you’ll still be able to meet plenty of friends along the way, even if they’re not directly with you.
Stop Being Down on Yourself
It’s easy to spot the problems and negative traits that we have. These issues are the ones that stand out to us, and the ones that we notice the most because they cause us the most pain. Because of this, focusing on these negative sides of our personality can become all-consuming, and it makes us worry about trying anything new or meeting new people. In some cases, it can even lead to mental health problems such as anxiety or depression.
So why not focus on the positive instead? When you switch perspectives and you concentrate on the good things about your personality and your life, and all the things you can do as opposed to the things you can’t, you’ll find that everything changes. You’ll be much happier, more confident, and ready to face the world as yourself.
