Your Guide to Bullet Journaling: 2022 Edition

The new year has started and you may be thinking about starting a bullet journal. Consider this article your guide to all things bullet journal-related. I will detail some of my favorite utensils, inspiration accounts, and more. If you’ve considered bullet journaling in the last year, this is your sign to start in 2022.

You may be asking yourself, what is a bullet journal? A bullet journal is a personalized planner that you create. You start with a blank canvas and fill it with beautiful spreads which help you organize your life. Bullet journals can be planners, time capsules, or a mix of both. These spreads can range from anything between calendars, habit trackers, sleep trackers, and more.

I have been bullet journaling for the last 4 years. Every year has been unique and has taught me something useful for the next year. In previous years, I’ve discovered the journals that have low-quality paper, the pens which are the most versatile, and the most achievable spreads. The biggest thing to take away from the experience and this article is that bullet journaling is completely for you. Something that works for one person, may not work for another and it’ll take time before you understand what works for you.

Gathering Inspiration

To begin you’ll need some inspiration! Three places you can start are Pinterest, Instagram, and YouTube. These three places will give you insight into some of the different spreads you can create. It will allow you to get a grasp of what you are getting into. You’ll be able to find others who bullet journal and perhaps want to showcase their work. One of the most popular creators in the bullet journaling space is AmandaRachLee. You can view her videos here for her insight as well!

Once you’ve gathered inspiration for your bullet journal and you’ve decided where you want to go, you must start gathering supplies.

The Journal Itself

As for the journal, there is no limit. I use the Artist Loft Dot Journal but that’s only the tip of the iceberg. These journals are sold at Michaels. The aforementioned creator, AmandaRachLee, also has a line of dotted journals which come highly recommended. These are slightly more expensive, but worth the investment. Not only does she create journals, but you can also find other supplies which could aid you in your bullet journaling journey. Another great company to purchase a journal from is Archer and Olive. These notebooks are widely used in the bullet journaling community and are seen to be among the best. This company also makes pens and other supplies which could be resourceful to you. Amazon can also be a great place to buy a journal. Be sure to check the reviews and ensure they will stand the test of time.

Something important to take away from the journal purchasing experience is that this journal should look and reflect what you want to see. The journal must be something which you look at and feel not only satisfaction but also connection. This is somewhere you will be placing sensitive information and it must be yours.

Now that we’ve found our journal, let’s move into what pens you can use in your new journal!

New Stationery!

A set of pens that are used daily in my bullet journal are the Crayola SuperTips. These pens are what I consider an absolute must when bullet journaling. Not only are they inexpensive compared to the other pens frequently used, but they are also incredibly versatile. You can use them not only to color certain objects but also to hand letter to your heart’s content. I’ve noticed little to no wear and tear on my current set after almost 3 years of use. These are commonly sold at Target, Michaels, Amazon, and most other big-name retailers.

If you are looking to invest, a great place to get high-quality brush pens is Tombow. Tombow creates brush pens meant for any and every journal. I use two different sets of pens from them. One set of pens I use are called the Tombow Fudenoske Brush Pens. I would say these are perfect for beginners that are looking to experiment with brush pens. These pens come in both a hard and soft tip to allow you to test your skills and control.

Another great set of pens that Tombow produces is called the Tombow Dual Brush Pens. These brush pens are perfect for bullet journaling as they have a perfect wash of color and a wide selection of colors. These pens are double-sided, one being a brush nib and the other a bullet nib. With the proper practice and care, these pens will be your best friend as you go through the process of bullet journaling. These pens will give a gorgeous wash of color across the page and give stunning results each time.

Time to Start the Journal

Now that you have gathered all the supplies needed, you are ready to begin. Find some relaxing music, or maybe a show you want to watch and go for it. There is no correct way of bullet journaling. All you have to do is create a journal that works for you. Take the time to create each spread as you please, or maybe find some other great products to use that are not already listed. Whatever you do, make sure to have fun!
