When is the Right Time to Start Christmas Festivities?

The Most Wonderful Time of The Year

Christmas has been one of my favorite holidays for as long as I can remember. I celebrate Christmas from the Christian standpoint, but no matter why you choose to celebrate, most of us can agree on one thing; Christmas is the best time of the year. This jolly holiday brings along some of the best music, movies, traditions and atmosphere.

Sure, Halloween is fun and Thanksgiving has some great food, but Christmas encompasses an entire joyous season. I have always been the type of person that yearns for Christmas throughout the year. I will also admit that Thanksgiving isn’t something I feel necessary to have a season. I do celebrate Thanksgiving, but I will also watch Christmas movies from Halloween on. This topic has become a heated debate among my family in recent years. When is the right time to start the Christmas season?

Let’s start the Jingle Bell Rock

I am a true lover of all things Christmas. So, on the Saturday after Halloween of this year, I asked my family if we could put up the Christmas decorations. Once again, I sparked this debate with my mother specifically. She believes that it is too early to start the Christmas season and that the festivities should wait until after Thanksgiving.

When we couldn’t come to a conclusion, I took to social media-having my followers to vote on the decision. Is it too early to begin Christmas? 40 people responded, a good mix of people. I had everyone from teens to grandmothers, men and women respond. The verdict was clear. Christmas can start now. With 30 votes for now and 10 for after Thanksgiving, I decided to speak to someone from each side and get their commentary.

The Debate On Decking The Halls

First I spoke to someone who wants to start Christmas immediately. When asked if she thought we should skip Thanksgiving she replied, “No, Thanksgiving is a holiday spanning generations. All I am saying is that we celebrate Christmas for the days leading to Thanksgiving and the days after Thanksgiving.” I have to say that I agree.

Thanksgiving doesn’t span an entire season and only one day.”  When I spoke with the person who said that we should wait until after Thanksgiving they counter argued that, “Thanksgiving is a time when we are showing our thankfulness for others and our appreciation to the people around us.” While I do agree, I would have to say that having a whole holiday where we show appreciation is quite odd. I believe that we should be appreciative and thankful for others all year round, so why should we have a holiday dedicated to common decency?

You’re a Mean One, Thanksgiving

From my research, I have realized that there is no definite decision on when to start the Christmas season. However, I have realized that I am at a loss. Despite my efforts, I must wait until after Thanksgiving to start Christmas. I can’t start decking the halls or take a sleigh ride just yet, but that won’t stop me from listening to some good Christmas jams. So whatever your stance, just remember that Christmas time is coming. You better watch out because soon enough, Santa Claus is coming to town!
