Should You Learn to Drive

Learning to drive could give you more freedom and independence. However, it can also be very expensive – and not always necessary for some people.

Less young people are learning to drive. That said, learning to drive is still very popular and it can still be a very useful skill to have. Below are a few questions to ask yourself when determining whether to learn to drive or not.

Do you want to drive?

This is the most important question to ask yourself. Some people can feel pressured into driving because their parents want them to or because friends are doing it. Driving should be something that you want to do for you.

Can you afford to drive?

There are lots of costs to consider when learning to drive. Not only is there the cost of lessons and taking your test, but you’ve also got to factor in the cost of buying a car, getting insured and being able to afford maintenance and fuel.

If your parents aren’t able to help you out and you don’t have any savings, you may have to get a part-time job to fund all this. There are lots of ways to save money while learning to drive which could make it more possible if you’re on a tight budget.

Could a car help you to get around?

Learning to drive could give you the freedom and independence to go where you want when you want. You won’t have to rely on public transport and you won’t have to rely on getting lifts from other people. It could be a huge convenience if you live somewhere remote in which the only way to get from A to B is by road.

Of course, if you live in a city with good public transport links, you may find that driving isn’t necessary – it could even be slower to take a car. Just be wary that if you ever decide to move, your circumstances may be different/

Could learning to drive benefit your future career?

Knowing how to drive could open up all kinds of job opportunities. It could allow you to find work as a delivery driver – this site offers a free sign up and allows you to bid on the delivery jobs you want. It could be important for working in many emergency services – you won’t be able to get a job as a paramedic or a police officer unless you have a license. It could also help you to land real estate or sales jobs. There are also many jobs where it could help you to commute.

Think about what career you’d like to follow and whether driving could help.

Are you old enough to drive?

The legal driving age varies around the US – in most states it’s 16, but in some states you can’t legally drive on your own until you’re 18. It’s possible to start learning to drive as young as 14 in some states. Make sure that you know what the local laws are.
