Poem: “if i had all that i wanted”

i want to go to canada.

see the woods and

feel the cold and

meet the people

(because i have always heard

the people there

are kinder than

the people here).

i want to see oregon.

because although

i never have fit in

in this place,

something tells me

it would feel

like home.

i want to visit new orleans.

but not because

i want to dance

at a bar on bourbon street,

or figure out

why it’s called

the crescent city,

but because i want

to be part

of a family,

[and you always said

i could be part

of yours].

i want to live in seattle.

feel the damp mist on my skin

and the fog in my bones,

sit outside and

let it soak deep into my soul.

i want to hike wales.

with a pack on my shoulders,

while tripping over my

hiking boots

(that have always been

a size too big)

and eating scones

in tiny b&bs’,

i want to walk vermont.

(but only in the fall)

so i can wear

my favorite blue sweater

and listen to you remind me

that i am beautiful.

i want to dance in an apple orchard.

get married in

the crisp autumn air,

and tell you that

although i want to see

the world,

the only thing

i need to see

is you.
