I’m Proud to be a Feminist.

Being a girl can prove difficult especially in Africa, Nigeria to be specific. I attend a private school that charges what the average working class parent can afford. A teacher once said to a boy in my school, “Do not be distracted by her in class. Her education will end in the kitchen.” I couldn’t stand this particular male chauvinist just like the other ones.

Zendaya’s speech at the Teen Choice Awards came to mind, “I need you to understand that you have a voice, and it’s okay to use it when you see something bad happening.” I decided to confront the teacher for such a stereotyped belief. Many girls joined in, letting our voices be heard, for we could not stand the injustice anymore. The teacher apologized, and it displayed the unity and power of girls. J.K. Rowling was right after all when she said, “We do not need magic to transform our world. We carry all of the power we need inside ourselves already.”
