How to Stay Active and Healthy During Quarantine

Since we all have been in quarantine for a while now, we have had to adjust to daily life and our new normal.

I just finished my freshman year of college, so coming home early from what was a great year of living on my own and learning how to be independent, was definitely a disappointment and hard to adjust to. At first when I came home from college, I tried to stick to my daily routine as best I could: wake up at 9 am, “go to class”, do homework and study, and relax and get ready for the next day. However, I could only handle sticking to that daily routine until final exams. After finals, I had no plans. No daily routine. No schedule to keep me busy and sane during this time of isolation.

That was when I had to get creative with my time.

One activity that has kept me busy and helped me not go stir crazy is finding ways that I can keep myself active and healthy during quarantine. However, I have found that staying healthy does not only mean getting active and moving your body, but it also includes keeping your mind healthy and happy by doing things to rejuvenate and cleanse your mind from all of the stresses that might occur. Here are a few things that you can do during quarantine to stay active, healthy, and happy:

Go on walks around your neighborhood or at a local park.

When I find myself getting stir crazy, it is usually after I have stayed inside all day. My mom and I have been going on a walk every other day so that we can get some fresh air after doing work or watching tv all day. Even if it is only for 20 minutes, some fresh air will keep you from getting cabin fever and will help you feel refreshed.

Practice self care with having a relaxing night with your family or doing a face mask.

I have been fortunate enough to be with most of my family during this time. Even though we are with each other 24/7, it is always nice to have a family movie night and to relax together at the end of another long day. However, a lot of people, including my sister who lives in an apartment by herself, don’t have other people to keep them company. One thing that my sister does when she is having a hard time is FaceTime family and friends or doing her nails. Practicing self care is always important, but it is especially important during this time of isolation. Whether you are quarantining with other people or you are by yourself, there are activities that you could do to help relax your mind.

Give yourself grace during this time and don’t be pressured to have a “glo-up”.

Since quarantine has started, there have been videos all over social media about how to get a glo-up (a drastic change in physical appearance to match society’s “perfect and fit” norms) or different exercises that you can do to lose 20 pounds before quarantine is over. Even though social media is promoting that everybody should have a glo-up during quarantine, don’t feel pressured by this. Quarantine will end some time and you will be able to get back to your normal lifestyle. You are beautiful and loved the way you are, so don’t try to fit the social norms. All that matters during this time is that you are happy. This time of social isolation is stressful for everyone, so you shouldn’t have to add more stress.

All in all, the most important thing during quarantine is to stay healthy and happy, and know that there is hope for the future.
