Willow Shields/ Prim Evergreen

The Hunger Games film trilogy has reached its climax with the November 20th-released movie, Mockingjay Part 2. Willow Shields, the actress who played Prim Everdeen, the sister of main character Katniss Everdeen, talks about her experience growing up on camera and her favorites scenes from the latest movie.

Justine Magazine:

You’ve grown up so much from the original Hunger Games to the final movie, and so has your character. Do you connect with Prim’s maturity growth?

Willow Shields:

I think, you know, there is that connection with the fact that we are the same age throughout each film. That’s the only real big connection I have with Prim just because she lives in such a different world than I do. I was ten when I started the first film and now I’m 15! It’s been a huge part of my life and I’ve kind of grown up with her.

JM: In the series you’re the more nurturing one —you care for and love people and animals. Would you say this reflects your true personality or are you more of the fearless go-getter in real life, like Katniss?

WS: I think I kinda have a little bit of both! I mean, it’s good to have a little bit of both (laughs) but Prim is such an incredibly kind person, always there for other people, so I try to kinda take some of that into my own life! And then Katniss is, as you said, very fearless and kind of goes for things, so for me I really like to try and use both of those things in my life!

JM: Would you say that you have a favorite scene in Mockingjay: Part 2?

WS: I don’t know, that’s a hard question! I don’t think I ever had a favorite scene. I think what was really cool about both Mockingjay Part 1 & 2 is that I was able to film scenes with different actors that I never worked with before on set! Like Mockingjay: Part 1 I got to film with Julianne Moore; you know I feel like 90 percent of my past scenes have been with Jen and that’s really cool.
