Creating Healthy Habits

Living a healthy lifestyle is something most people strive for, but it is much easier said than done. Here are some tips that I’ve used to stay healthy!

Stay Hydrated

Drinking enough water is key to staying healthy. Drinking enough water can lead to clearer skin, a better mood, and clearer thinking. Staying hydrated is even important for some of the more basic functions of our bodies. Our bodies are 60% water and out blood is 90% percent. Our blood carries oxygen throughout our bodies so without enough water, it cannot do this as well and can also increase blood pressure. While there is no universally recognized standard for how much water everyone should drink daily, most agree that everyone should drink at least 6-8 cups a day.

Exercise

The Mayo Clinic recommends that everyone gets at least 30 minutes of exercise a day. This could include biking, walking, swimming, running, dancing, or strength training (although not everyday). They also suggest everyone limits their time sitting down as this can lead to metabolic issues.

As a teenager who sits all day in school, I have found this to be extremely difficult. When I get home I attempt to spend as little time sitting while doing my homework but depending on how much I have this is not always feasible. Some fixes for this issue are investing in a standing desk or a walking pad– an under desk treadmill. These are both pretty easy and mindless ways to stay a bit more active during your day.

Healthy Eating

Perhaps the most important-yet hardest-part of living a healthy lifestyle. It can be very difficult to limit unhealthy foods without attempting to completely limit whole food groups and not getting all the nutrients that you need. The most important thing is to balance what you eat. There is absolutely nothing wrong with splurging and eating foods that aren’t the healthiest, so maybe eat those in smaller portions or less frequently.

It is also extremely important to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. They contain vitamins and minerals that are important for digestion and good gut health. They have plenty of good fiber which is essential for a healthy diet.

Everyone should get about 5 servings of fruits and veggies everyday which may seem like a lot, but it is actually very achievable. Every morning, I make a smoothie filled with spinach, kale, apples, peaches, strawberries and more. This allows me to get in about 2-3 servings of fruits and veggies in the morning. You cant even taste the spinach or kale so it tastes just like any fruit smoothie!

I hope that some of these tips are helpful! I’ve learned that the biggest favor you can do yourself is knowing that you will not be perfect. It can be very easy to chastise yourself for not exercising one day or not drinking enough water but it’s not about being perfect! Whatever your personal goal is, giving yourself grace is key and can help you lead to a healthier lifestyle.
