Choosing A College Major

August 30, 2020

Hey everyone my name is Dominique Coats and I’m a student at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. I was told that high school was the next phase of my life and what I made of it was important. I never thought about what I wanted to do post-graduation. During my first year of college I switched from general study to music, biology, social work, and physical therapy. I could not make up my mind.

Being confident in what you want to do post-graduation is important because it shows that you are passionate about that field. It could be philosophy, if that is the field you are passionate about and you believe that you can make a career out of it then go for it. In this blog I will share with you some of my own experiences with choosing a college major. I will also share tips on how to choose your own majors.

How did I choose my major?

I always known I would like to work in the entertainment industry. I also knew I always wanted to work behind the scenes. So, I decided I wanted to be a T.V producer. A Television Producer is a person that is responsible for overseeing things on set. What is my major now? It is Communication and Broadcasting with a minor in  Professional writing. The reason I have chosen this major that is because it suites the field of television production.

 What you are passionate about?

High school is a great place to find out who you are and what are your interests. The best way to figure that out is the join an organization. There are plenty of organizations and clubs you can join in high school. Example: When I first started high school, I was apart of the JROTC which is a Military organization. JROTC is great for young girls who are interested in joining military after high school and it also helps in building leadership skills.

I also took cosmetology classes at school and it was fun learning how to do nails. I have learned a lot about how to properly polish someone’s nails and the importance of sanitizing our work areas. In that class, I learned of different bacteria and diseases affiliated with not cleaning our areas properly. Cosmetology does not stop at nails. You can also learn how to do hair or even learn how to become a barber and so much more. There are colleges around the country that offer great cosmetology programs.

If you are not an art type of girl  or if you are not interested in the military, or if you just don’t care about hair and makeup then there are other places. Some of you might be passionate about the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematic (STEM).

Do your research:

If you are interested in a field then it is important to do your research. What should you research? Well, if your major is biology you should research what career opportunities are available for that field. When you figure out where you can work then look up the salary for the job you have chosen to do.

Choosing your major in college.

Now that you have graduated high school and you have made up your mind on where you want to go to school it is now time to choose a major. When it comes to choosing a major you will reflect on the thing you were interested in during high school. After you have thought of what you want to major in, you select that field.

Picking a college major doesn’t have to be hard if you are passionate about a certain field.
