New Birmingham Teen Group Addresses Mental Health

MHYC, or the Mental Health Youth Council of Jefferson County, began in the summer of 2016 with 13 members representing different high schools and colleges, along with 5 adults, all involved in community advancement and/or mental health education in the city of Birmingham.

The purpose of this Mental Health Organization is to eliminate the stigma associated with mental health in all communities, and to also bring awareness by exposing the community to mental health education, through initiatives, events, programs, and much needed dialogues. Membership recruitment took place this summer with the addition of 13 youth interested in forwarding this organization.

Anyone can be involved with MHYC, but membership for youth council members is not necessarily needed at the moment due to the abundant number of members who already hold positions. The main requirement concerns age; applicants must be 16-24 years of age. In order to be part of initiatives, e-mail Jan Bell, MPH, executive director of Children’s Policy Council of Jefferson County of Jefferson County at [email protected].
