If I Could Drink the Sky

If I could drink the sky, I would drink it at dawn
When the air is cool and fresh
And tastes of new beginnings.
I would drink it when the birds begin to sing their lovely songs
I would drink their sweet melodies
I’d let them fill my lungs.
If I could drink the sky, I would drink it in the morning
The fresh taste of sun and a gentle breeze
A sunrise that’s sweeter than berries
When yawns from early risers resound like bells.
If I could drink the sky, I would drink it at noon
A thick, heavy warmth would fill my senses
The light from the trees would pour through the leaves
The taste of chartreuse green.
If I could drink the sky, I would drink it in the afternoon
The misty, smokey flavor of settling down
The sighs and the laughter of leisurely fun
I would drink it with delight.
If I could drink the sky, I would drink it in the evening
When the sun begins to sink
Like a golden globe in the sea.
The vibrant flavors of sunset
The dense, beautiful tang of the air turning dark.
If I could drink the sky, I would drink it at twilight
The sparkling flavor of mystery
The smoothness of the crepuscule
Would rush over me like a wave.
If I could drink the sky, I would drink it at dusk
A dry, gray time
The taste of yawns and smiles
And rumors of sleep.
If I could drink the sky, I would drink it at night,
The pitch black night, when the air is sweet and bitter
Sometimes weak, sometimes strong
I drink the air and wait
For the flavor of dawn.
The taste of newness
Of triumph and hope.
