How I Have Changed from the Beginning of 2020 to the End

One thing 2020 taught us is how tenuous the future can be

At the beginning of the pandemic, I was disheartened by missed opportunities and became obsessed with predicting when everything would return to normal. I realized the futility of my mindset and started focusing on the present. As well as the omnipresent ability to learn and grow regardless of circumstances.

Changing my perspective taught me that I have the ability to

Juggle

• First with ping pong balls, then softballs. Hopefully, I can master flaming chainsaws before 2021.

Splits

• I learned how to do the splits!!!!

Rap Lyrics? Check!

• I can recite the lyrics to Eminem’s Rap God in my sleep.

Unlocking the Divine Future

• I learned about divination systems by taking a free Havard College course on “Omens, Oracles, & Prophecies.

Old Dog, New Tricks

I learned I have a passion for card tricks. In hindsight, it is unsurprising that an activity that combines mathematical concepts such as probability and sequences with intellectually subtle mysteries would be extremely appealing.

When I perform the card tricks for my family, they always ask, “How did you do it?” Though I jokingly answer, “pretty well, eh?” or “with highly trained mice,” I know the answer is with hours of youtube videos and practice.

POV

I learned a new perspective on perspectives. The year has been marked with political and social disunity creating an environment riddled with disagreement. Instead of forcing my viewpoints onto those who disagree with me and relentlessly defending my own, I realized that I should understand others’ to work towards progress.

Now, I intentionally put my ideas in situations where they are meticulously criticized, not blindly accepted, challenged instead of pampered. I subscribed to news emails from “The American Conservative” and the left-leaning “Vox” to expose myself to various perspectives instead of hiding behind my own.

Oh, and I’m also a year older.

As 2020 nears its end, I implore everyone to continue their own journey of growth in whatever form or fashion that may be!
