Girl Power Moments in Marvel Comics

I’ve been reading Marvel comics for quite a while now. Most superhero teams have more male than female heroes, and while they’re good characters, it’s still nice to see female heroes in the spotlight. Here are three of my most favorite girl power moments in the comics I’ve read!

Wanda Maximoff in House of M: Warzones

House of M: Warzones takes place in an alternate reality that Magneto rules. The Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, and Polaris are part of the royal family, as are the Scarlet Witch’s children, Wiccan and Speed. Wiccan and Speed rebel against their grandfather’s anti-human ideals. The Red Guard, a group of mutants working for the king, is sent to stop the royal grandsons. Wolverine is holding Wiccan by the collar when Wanda arrives. She demands that he let go of her son, and when he doesn’t, she literally takes him apart brick-by-brick using her reality-bending powers. (And she looked very cool doing it.)

America Chavez in A-Force

The A-Force is a group of all-female superheroes defending a place called Arcadia. America, Captain Marvel, Dazzler, and Nico Minoru are on patrol when a megalodon leaps out of the water! (Admittedly, I had no idea what was going on. However…) After the team was thrown around a bit, there’s a panel of America’s eyes, and she looked angry. She says, “Sharknado tried to murder me and my friends.” She picks up the ginormous shark and hurls it into the distance. That shark was easily more than 10 times bigger than she was. Nobody should ever underestimate America freaking Chavez.

Kate Bishop in Secret Wars Journal

In Secret Wars storyline, there were a bunch of universe-destroying incursions. One of these universes was a world where Marvel heroes live in the year 1602. Lady Kate and her friends Billy and Teddy are renowned thieves. While stealing from a cathedral, they realize they have walked into a trap! Kate tells her friends to get as far away as they can after she causes a distraction by jumping out the window. Wait, what? The escape after that takes up two whole pages, and it is a work of art. Kate shoots a perfectly-aimed grappling hook arrow while falling. She then proceeds to skillfully beat up some soldiers. Absolutely iconic.

Wanda, America, and Kate are three of the best female superheroes! The three of them will do whatever it takes to protect the ones they love, and they do it in the best way possible: girl power!
