Listed below are 5 thought-provoking, entertaining, and well-written books and TV shows that added value to my life I’ve seen in the last year and may add value to yours too.
1. (Book) The Language of God by Francis S. Collins
This one is a good read especially for those looking to reconcile their scientific views with their spiritual views. The author, as a prominent scientist, offers unexpected insights on spirtuality from a scientific and formerly skeptical perspective.
2. (Book) Body and Soul by Alondra Nelson
A highly informative and moving piece of literature on the role of the Black Panther Party in medical activism during the era of the US civil rights movement.
3. (Book) Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
The ending will leave you with joy, rage, and everything in between. This novel doesn’t leave the mind so easily. Value added here is emotional.
4. (TV Show) The Dictator’s Playbook
This show reviews a handful of dictators and their strategies in an entertaining, sardonic fashion. It’s the least boring history lesson you’ll ever get, and you’ll finish it having learned some patterns among the dictatorial rule of the leaders reviewed. In the words of Mark Twain, “History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes.” Primary value added here is through learning.
5. (TV Show) Kim’s Convenience
Hilarious, heartwarming, and very easy to get emotionally invested in. Primary value added by this one was just joy – it’s a lighthearted show that’s perfect for when you want to take a break.
