You Don't Know What You Want To Do With Your Life Yet, and That's Ok

Advice for Life After High School

As most people get closer to graduation, they think that they have to have their entire life plan figured out, which is often not the case. Many people decide to go to college after graduation but still go into it as an undecided major. Even if they do declare a major, more than 80% of college students end up changing their major at least once. People change so much just within the first year or two after high school graduation that there is not a way to determine precisely what the right path is for them right away.

Personally, I started out as an athletic training major. Then, during my sophomore year, I decided that I wanted to start reading again because I never did in high school. I then discovered through reading and my American Literature class that I loved the written language, and I wanted to be an English major. This is something I never thought in my wildest dreams that I would do. It was all because I matured and became a different person than I was in high school.

We don’t always know who we are at 16, 17, or even 18-years-old. It’s good to start on one path, but no one should ever feel sorry for listening to one’s heart and changing the path for one’s life that is more suited for the person they are or have become. We are working towards something that we want to do for the rest of our lives. Whether it is going into the armed forces, becoming a teacher, or getting a doctorate, it’s our dreams, and it doesn’t matter how long it takes to realize what they are, as long as we chase after them wholeheartedly.
