Unpopular Opinion: Dating in High School is Perfectly Fine

It is safe to say that most of us want a significant other at some point in our lives. Throughout high school, you will hear adults talk about how you shouldn’t date while you are so young because it “won’t last.” While this may be true in most cases, dating in high school can teach you a lot about dating and romance in general without most of the consequences that come with an adult relationship.

The ultimate problem that people see in high school dating is that more than likely it won’t last forever. While oftentimes this is true because a lot of things change about you over time, it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t try, and, most importantly, you shouldn’t go into a relationship thinking it’s only temporary. As long as you don’t forget to put yourself first, it can not only be a great experience, as most of us already know, but it can be a great learning experience as well.

Falling in love is fun and exciting, but only when it’s the right kind of person. When you are young, you may not know who the right person is for you. If you never date because you listen to people who tell you that you just shouldn’t waste your time, then you’ll never figure it out, and, overall, it can be hard to have good judgment when dating in the real world.

It can not only help you learn what you want in a significant other, but it can teach you the best way to be a companion for someone else, which will help create the best relationship for you and your partner. Dating at a young age can teach you how to deal with things like jealousy, getting past arguments or disagreements, and sometimes knowing when and how to end things even when you don’t want to.

Of course, dating shouldn’t be everything. You shouldn’t invest most or all of your time in finding a perfect significant other instead of working on things like grades, extracurricular activities, or whatever may benefit your plans for the future. Most people will say to only focus on those things, but, I’m here to tell you that even though it should be a major priority, it doesn’t have to be the only one.

If you are young and in high school, it doesn’t mean that there isn’t someone out there who will love you with their whole being. There is always someone who will have something negative to say, but, if you are smart, responsible, and, most importantly, happy, then the negative things other people say are irrelevant.
