Social Life and Academics

Social life and Academics

Being a female teenager is difficult for various reasons. One prominent issue I encountered, and also noticed amongst my female friends was the struggle to balance social life and academics. Many schools today cause students stress, and deprive several beneficial hours of sleep, causing students to struggle in the classroom and also within their friend group. Our mental health definitely affects our physical and social health, which is why we must learn how to balance it.

As females, we do sometimes encounter extra doses of oppression from society. We’re expected to be very smart but are also picked on when all we do is study. I personally was teased many times because my friends from other schools did not understand why I never went to dances, games, or parties. I, along with a few other females in my grade barely ever went out and mainly remained home to study. Eventually, this got tiring and I realized that I was missing out on a lot of great opportunities with my friends.

The key to finding a balance between your social life and academics is to exercise self-control. It sounds simple, but it’s easier said than done. You have to start off by setting a goal for yourself- for example saying you want to have only A’s and B’s by the end of each quarter. Once that goal is made, you have to work toward it and really stay focused on it. The only way you can stay focused on reaching your goal is if you have a friend group who understand that you might have to miss the next party to study for the test. You may be saying to yourself, “What if they laugh at me and eventually stop being my friend?” My answer to that is this: friends are important, but if your friends are not encouraging you to do the right thing, you have to make a decision for yourself. Once the goal is reached, you’ll be able to attend outings, and you may even have a positive influence on your friends. It is important to maintain and respect priorities. Once this principle is learned in high school, it truly remains with you longer than you would expect.
