Getting BURNED OUT in Sports! by Kristen Gardner, GirlSpring Intern/UAB student

BURNED OUT……….The word no athlete ever wants to hear, feel, or imagine. The reality is that this happens to most athletes. According to a study done years ago, 6 percent of athletes said they felt BURNED OUT at some point during their athletic career. This is over half of the 100 percentile of athletes. Unfortunately, I can attest to being one of those athletes. It was my Junior year of college and I felt completely Burned Out to the point where I did not love my sport anymore. Thankfully with a great coach, rest, and a good support system, I was able to bounce back and continue doing what I love. Here are some tips to help you not have to go through the same thing.

1. Find a BALANCE! It is important to separate yourself from your sport and have a life outside of it. Sometimes we get so addicted to our sport that that is the only thing that we do. Find a hobby or try doing some different from your everyday schedule.

2. Go talk to your coach! Sometimes this can be the hardest thing for us to do athletes. Sometimes we feel like we do not want to disappoint our coach but if you feel overwhelmed the best thing to do is to talk to them.

3. Find time to rest! You have to find time to rest your body. The everyday schedule of an athlete causes a lot of wear and tear on the body. It is important to get treatment and to rest.

4. Remember your WHY! This is the most important on the list. When I thought about walking away from my sport I took time to reflect on the reasons why I decided to cheer in the first place. This helped me regain my passion for what I was doing. Remember WHY you started and it will make it hard for you to ever want to leave.
