Black History Month, a poem from the Desert Island Supply Company

Black History Month by Achaia L.

Black history month is
not an old stone ready
to be thrown. It’s a
fresh flower waiting
to be picked.
The beautiful light shining down on it
Makes the fertile ground
heat up a bit. The seeds
turn to roots
and the roots
turn into a delicate tree
standing with its leaves
spreading out wide
waiting for its time
to shine.

This poem was taken from the book, Jellyfish In Disguise, a book of poems created by students in the Woodlawn area, and from Putnam Middle School, produced by Desert Island Supply Company.
